John finally stepped down as Secretary at the Beaconsfield meeting.
Kim Harris presented John with a series of gifts purchased from monies very generously donated by the members. These included Garmin wrist worn distance device, a Samsung smart 'phone, vouchers for
tea for 2 at the Dorchester, a Selfridges gift voucher for £270 & a large bouquet of flowers to take home to Jill.
We thank John for his efforts over seventeen years in this role.
As many of you are aware I was privileged to be only the fourth Secretary of the Society spanning the century of existence. Reflecting upon joining way back in October 95, can distinctly remember being not only warmly welcomed abut also being struck by the friendship and camaraderie of the membership. As in all golfing Societies, standards of play vary enormously but we have always tried to mix Members together, hence the regular Team competition at most venues.
Keith Atkinson, my predecessor, was a very hard act to follow as his attention to detail was second to none. He even sent out a prepaid post card when giving details of a fixture, so no excuse for not replying! I have enjoyed my time in the role and in particular the cut and thrust of negotiating the terms for the day with many Secretaries and more recently General Managers. We had some lean years of Membership around the turn of the Century but in my wildest dreams I would never have thought that we could have reached the dizzy heights of over 100.
The introduction of an Officer of the Day has helped enormously with the smooth running of each event and I would like to thank personally all who over time have undertaken this role and also the 17 Captains in my term of office for all their support.
My very best wishes go to Chris for taking over the mantel and know that you will give him your full support and also to all the team of Officers and in particular your newly elected Captain George Michie.
Finally can I thank you all, on behalf of Gill and myself, most sincerely for the wonderful gifts presented to me to mark my retirement. I am truly overwhelmed by your generosity and look forward to seeing you all at many more meetings to come.
